A stampede broke out at the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus as people were leaving the mosque following Friday prayers. According to initial reports, 3 people lost their lives and 5 people were injured in the crush.

Footage shared on social media showed citizens inside the mosque providing initial aid to the injured.
Damascus Governor Mahir Mervan stated in a statement to the Syrian News Agency (SANA) that an unfortunate incident occurred today at the Umayyad Mosque, resulting in the death of 3 people and injuries to many others due to a stampede during one of the civilian events held inside and around the mosque.
Emphasizing that they take full responsibility for what happened at the mosque and are working to take urgent measures to ensure such incidents do not recur in public places in the future, Mervan said, "We are following up with the Ministry of Interior to investigate the details and causes of the incident, and we will take all necessary measures to hold those responsible accountable."
