Statement from Ahmet Ercan following the earthquake in İzmir! Aftershock warning issued...

Following the 5.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred in İzmir, earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan stated in a post on his social media account, "I am of the opinion that this is the main earthquake. Aftershocks will continue to diminish over the next 2 weeks."

According to data from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) Earthquake Department, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Aegean Sea at approximately 08:19, with its epicenter off the coast of the Menderes district of İzmir.

The depth of the tremor in the Gulf of Kuşadası was recorded at 8.51 kilometers. The earthquake, which was also felt in surrounding provinces, caused brief panic.

While the Governor's Offices of İzmir and Aydın announced that there have been no negative reports regarding the earthquake so far, Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan made a post on his social media account following the earthquake.

"AFTERSHOCKS WILL CONTINUE TO DIMINISH OVER 2 WEEKS"

Noting that he expects an aftershock of 4.0 magnitude, Ercan said, "A magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred at 08:19 north of the Gulf of Kuşadası Pamucak. I am of the opinion that this is the main earthquake. Aftershocks will continue to diminish over 2 weeks. An aftershock of magnitude 4 may occur within a day or two. An earthquake of this magnitude is not destructive in this region. There is no problem." he stated.


"THERE IS NOTHING TO FEAR"

In his next post, Ercan shared a map of the earthquake and included the following statements; 

"The earthquake that occurred north of the Gulf of İzmir Pamucak took place on a secondary fault line that runs parallel to the Tuzla fault in the west and extends to İzmir via Claros-Ahmetbeyli-Menderes. It will not produce a larger earthquake. This earthquake is a typical earthquake for this fault. There is nothing to fear."
