Statement from the Directorate of Communications: Claim that 'canteens are closed at Silivri Prison' is manipulation

The Directorate of Communications' Center for Combating Disinformation stated, "The claim shared on some social media accounts and reported in the press that 'canteens are closed at Silivri Prison and inmates cannot meet their needs' is manipulation."

The statement made from the Center for Combating Disinformation's social media account read as follows:

"The claim shared on some social media accounts and reported in the press that 'canteens are closed at Silivri Prison and inmates cannot meet their needs' is manipulation. In the institutions located within the Marmara Penal Execution Institutions campus, the nutritional needs of convicts and detainees are provided by the institution. The daily main meals of the prisoners are prepared taking into account diet and health conditions, and their adequate and balanced nutrition is ensured by the institution. In addition to this, canteen orders are taken and delivered every weekday at designated hours." The statement, which noted that inventory counts are conducted in canteens and warehouses in penal institutions on the last day of every month as required by legal regulations, included the following expressions:

"It was previously notified to these convicts and detainees that sales transactions could not be carried out in the canteen on Monday, March 31, 2025, and necessary facilities were provided for them to meet their needs. There has been no disruption in canteen services, including during the Ramadan Feast holiday, and all necessary products have been supplied. Water, hygiene materials, and basic food items are provided free of charge by the institution to those housed in our penal institutions who do not have sufficient balance in their accounts. Services for convicts and detainees are maintained in accordance with human rights and legislation. Do not give credence to baseless claims aimed at manipulating the public."
