Statement from lawyer regarding Mahir Polat's health condition: Listed the risks

Polat's lawyer, Erkam Erdem, pointed out that Polat is at risk of a heart attack and brain hemorrhage, stating that his only expectation is his release.

Reporting that Polat's blood pressure has risen to fatal levels and that he is at risk regarding his heart, brain, and kidneys due to hypertension, lawyer Erkam Erdem shared the following in a statement on his social media account:

"I visited my client Mahir Polat last night. I would like to provide information about his current status:

First of all, he expressed that he feels honored by the support given to him by people from all walks of society since the first day he was arrested and during his hospital processes, and that this situation has been a great source of morale for him.

As you know, we had submitted reports regarding Mahir Bey's health problems during the statement and interrogation phase and—while stating that the conditions for arrest were not met—we had requested that judicial control be applied due to his health condition if an implementation was to be on the agenda, but this was rejected. Although Mahir Bey has many ailments, there are two that are significant in terms of prison conditions; hypertension and blockages in his coronary arteries. Due to these blockages, he has undergone angiography 4 times and has 6 stents. Two of his vessels are also being monitored.

"SERIOUSLY RAISES THE RISK OF HEART ATTACK AND BRAIN HEMORRHAGE"

[According to the information I received from the doctors] Hypertension causes permanent damage to the heart, brain, and kidneys. It seriously raises the risk of a heart attack and brain hemorrhage. Within the past week, Mahir Bey was referred to nearby hospitals twice due to high blood pressure—first at 18/12 and the second at 24/11 (a fatal level)—because the hospital in the prison was insufficient. During the second visit to Mehmet Akif Ersoy Hospital, an angiography was performed this time.

Mahir Bey's blood pressure was only lowered by administering nitrate intravenously. An angiography was performed, and the existing blocked vessels and stents were checked. There are two findings in the angiography that are significant in terms of prison conditions: slow flow and plaque in the capillaries. After being kept under observation in the intensive care unit following the angiography, he was discharged with additional medications added to those he was already using.

"HYPERTENSION CONTINUES"

Mahir Bey is currently continuing to use these additional medications given to him in prison, but the hypertension continues. His blood pressure is measured every morning and evening. Yesterday, he had to take a sublingual pill again to lower his high blood pressure and rest.

He stated that his blood pressure rose to a level that would require him to be hospitalized again after being discharged, but that he would not request a transfer unless it became unbearable due to the difficulties in transferring from prison to the hospital (the road taking at least 1 hour, being handcuffed, and transported in a closed-box vehicle). His only expectation now is to be transferred to a full-fledged hospital on Monday to obtain a report and have it determined that his health condition is not suitable for prison.

"DOES NOT SHOW THAT HIS HEALTH HAS STABILIZED"

In summary; Mahir Polat being discharged from the hospital does not show that his health has stabilized. Hypertension continues, this blood pressure continues to damage his brain, kidneys, and especially his heart, and the risk of heart attack and brain hemorrhage is constant. Our hope and expectation is that this process will be completed without permanent effects on Mahir Bey's health, and that our request for transfer to a full-fledged hospital, which we made last week and which was accepted by the Prosecutor's Office, will be met as soon as possible and Mahir Bey will be released."
