Statement from Manisa Metropolitan Municipality regarding Yeni Akit and Zekeriya Say

Following the passing of Mayor Ferdi Zeyrek, Manisa Metropolitan Municipality has initiated official proceedings due to the controversial posts made by the reactionary Yeni Akit newspaper and the newspaper's News Manager, Zekeriya Say.

Yeni Akit, which published a headline reading “Ferdi Zeyrek struck” on the day Zeyrek was severely injured, continued to produce controversial reports following the tragic loss. The municipality has filed a criminal complaint against Zekeriya Say regarding social media posts made on the day of Mayor Zeyrek's funeral that caused public outrage.

Yeni Akit News Manager Zekeriya Say, who had run the headline “Ferdi Zeyrek struck” on the day Manisa Metropolitan Mayor Ferdi Zeyrek was severely injured after being electrocuted at his home, drew sharp public criticism for his posts on the day of the mayor's funeral following his passing.

Say, who had changed his social media profile picture to an image of an electric current, deleted the post following the criticism. However, the content that sparked outrage was not limited to this. Another image he shared with the note “Our cartoon for tomorrow” also caused anger on social media.
