Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was detained this morning in a dawn operation as part of an investigation into 'terrorism' and 'corruption' launched against the municipality.
Republican People's Party (CHP) Istanbul Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik made a statement on Vatan Street regarding the detention process.
Stating that 2 lawyers had entered the police headquarters to meet with İmamoğlu, Çelik said, "We do not accept this decision. This decision is an attempted coup. This is a coup; law enforcement is being made a tool in this crime."
Drawing attention to the primary election where the CHP will determine its presidential candidate on March 23, Çelik said, "We will set up the ballot box on Sunday and determine the presidential candidate. The government did everything it could to prevent the ballot box from being set up on March 23. Yesterday evening it was the diploma, today it is the detention. Now they will invent lies and slanders with the troll armies they feed. İmamoğlu will be the CHP's presidential candidate and will also be the president of Turkey."
Regarding the fact that İmamoğlu's health check was not performed, Çelik noted the following:
"Mr. Gökhan Günaydın announced that the health check would be performed inside the police station due to security concerns and the fear that a reaction might occur. I have not been able to follow which stage it is at right now. We can learn from him what the process regarding the health check is."
