Statement from the Directorate General of Population and Citizenship Affairs regarding claims of citizenship granted to Syrians

The Directorate General of Population and Citizenship Affairs has announced that claims stating "2.5 million Syrian nationals have been granted citizenship" do not reflect the truth.

The Directorate General issued a statement regarding the claims made on a television program that "2.5 million Syrian nationals have been granted Turkish citizenship."

In the statement, which noted that the claims do not reflect the truth, it was reported that the number of Syrian nationals who were under temporary protection in Turkey and have acquired Turkish citizenship is 238,768, of whom 134,624 are adults and 104,144 are children.

The following was noted in the statement:

"During our new Cabinet term, a total of 183 Syrian nationals, 101 of whom are adults and 82 of whom are children, have acquired Turkish citizenship. The claim that 2.5 million Syrian nationals have been granted Turkish citizenship in our country, as alleged in the program in question, is completely untrue and has no basis whatsoever. While the official figures of our Ministry regarding the acquisition of Turkish citizenship are clear, sharing figures that have no connection to reality as if they were true is an attitude that is in no way compatible with good faith, and it is kindly requested that these claims, which contain disinformation, not be given any credence."
