Statement from Yılmaz Tunç regarding Fatih Altaylı and Selahattin Demirtaş

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç, in his statement regarding the prison sentence received by journalist Fatih Altaylı on charges of "insulting the President" and "threatening," as well as the ongoing detention process, stated, "These matters are entirely at the discretion of the judiciary."

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç made statements to journalists during the process of submitting the 11th Judicial Package to the Turkish Grand National Assembly. Tunç also responded to questions regarding journalist Fatih Altaylı and Selahattin Demirtaş.

Making a statement in response to the questions, Minister of Justice Tunç stated that all proceedings regarding the case are being conducted by judicial authorities. Tunç noted that the decision was rendered by the court of first instance within the scope of the crimes of "insulting the President and threatening."

Stating that the judicial process has not yet been completed, Minister Tunç continued his remarks as follows:

"These matters are entirely assessments belonging to the judiciary. There is a decision rendered by the court of first instance and an ongoing process here. The discretion regarding whether detention will continue belongs entirely to the court. Legal remedies and the appellate process in this regard are open; legal channels will be followed."

Responding to a question regarding whether former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş would be released following the finalization of the ECHR decision, Tunç said, "The court will make the decision," stating that the process is entirely under the authority of judicial bodies.
