Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has been caught up in a striking detail that has emerged in the espionage investigation.
It has been learned that Hüseyin Gün, the figure at the center of the investigation, gave a presentation at the General Directorate of Security years ago.
According to a report by İsmail Saymaz from Halk TV, Gün explained in his statement that he gave a presentation at the Security Directorate to identify the “Fuat Avni” account, which is associated with FETÖ, and that this presentation was made at the request of the then-AKP Istanbul Deputy Mehmet Sekmen.
Gün shared the following information in his statement:
"After the December 17-25 process, a user named ‘Fuat Avni’ was making various posts on social media. Mehmet Sekmen consulted me about whether I could identify this user. Upon this, I gave a presentation to the relevant department at the General Directorate of Security. No further action was taken. I think the person who invited me to the Security Directorate might have been him (Sekmen)."
SEKMEN: ‘I DON’T KNOW IF I MIGHT HAVE SAID THAT’
Mehmet Sekmen, who was an AKP deputy at the time and currently serves as the Mayor of Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality, stated in his explanation to Saymaz that he does not remember Gün. Sekmen said, “I don’t remember him. I know the woman with him (Seher Erçili Alaçam). I might have seen Gün with her. I don’t know if I might have said ‘Can you find this?’”
Sekmen also stated that he did not get the impression that Gün was someone associated with espionage, noting that his primary contact was Alaçam, and added, “She was a social democrat, a decent lady.”
ADDED TO THE FILE LATER
On the other hand, it has emerged that Hüseyin Gün did not mention the names of Ekrem İmamoğlu and Necati Özkan at all in his initial statement. According to what Saymaz reported, these names were included in the file after the correspondence on Gün’s mobile phone was examined.
