Striking detail in the İzmir electrical tragedy: Revealed by expert report
A new expert report regarding the deaths of 2 people who were electrocuted during heavy rain in İzmir's Konak district has been submitted to the case file. The report stated that "the cable protective conduit was canceled in this section, and the insulation was damaged due to the grate pressing on the cable."

The expert report, prepared for the purpose of evidence assessment following a request by a group of lawyers regarding the deaths of 2 people who were electrocuted while trying to take shelter from a downpour in İzmir's Konak district on July 12, has been submitted to the case file.
The report, prepared after an on-site inspection and expert examination conducted on July 18 upon an application made by a group of lawyers to the İzmir 7th Civil Court of Peace to identify the responsible institutions, has been completed.
CABLE PROTECTION CANCELED!
The report added to the file stated that "the power cable was located just below the grate, the cable depth was approximately 15 centimeters, the cable protective conduit was canceled in this section, and the insulation was damaged due to the grate pressing on the cable."
Murat Fatih Ülkü, one of the lawyers who made the application, stated in a written statement that approximately 2.5 months have passed since the deaths of the 2 people who were electrocuted, and that the incident is beginning to be forgotten.
Claiming that many people have filed applications regarding similar incidents following the event and the legal process, Ülkü noted that electrical installations and cables should be inspected on all streets and avenues where there are problems or a possibility of problems.
WHAT HAPPENED?
In İzmir's Konak district, Özge Ceren Deniz, who stepped into a puddle during a downpour, and İnanç Öktemay, who tried to save her, lost their lives after being electrocuted. Following expert reports regarding the incident, a lawsuit was filed against 42 defendants, 13 of whom were under arrest, including senior executives of the İZSU General Directorate and GDZ Elektrik Dağıtım company, on charges of "causing the death of more than one person by conscious negligence." A group of lawyers had applied to the İzmir 7th Civil Court of Peace with a request to identify the responsible institutions, and a new expert examination was conducted.
