Şükrü Ersoy warns after Yalova earthquake: It's not the magnitude, it's the location that's concerning

Yıldız Technical University Civil Engineering faculty member Prof. Dr. Şükrü Ersoy, speaking during a live broadcast regarding the 4.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Çınarcık, Yalova, stated: "It is not the magnitude of the earthquake that is concerning, but its location. The tremor occurred on the North Anatolian Fault Line, where we are expecting a major earthquake."

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that a 4.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in Çınarcık, Yalova, yesterday (December 17) at 23:53. 

The earthquake, which was felt in Istanbul, Bursa, Kocaeli, and Balıkesir as well as Yalova, caused brief panic.

ŞÜKRÜ ERSOY DRAWS ATTENTION TO THE LOCATION OF THE EARTHQUAKE

Recent earthquakes in the Sea of Marmara have brought the potential major Istanbul earthquake back to the agenda. Experts have been making consecutive statements regarding the issue that citizens are curious about.

Speaking on CNN Türk, Prof. Dr. Şükrü Ersoy drew attention to the location of the earthquake rather than its magnitude.

Ersoy said the following: 

"Last night's earthquake occurred parallel to the North Anatolian Fault Line. This is a location that draws our attention, not because of the magnitude of the earthquake, but because of its location. The major earthquake was expected in this region, between the exit of the Gulf of İzmit and where the 1912 earthquake ended. We are expecting the potential major earthquake here. For example, we did not say this about the 5.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Gemlik in recent days. Starting from Bolu, this branch splits into two. One goes from the Gulf of Gemlik to Çanakkale."

"IT WILL NOT TRIGGER A MAJOR EARTHQUAKE, BUT WE HAVE SEEN THAT THE FAULT LINE IS ACTIVE"

There is no such thing as such an earthquake triggering a major earthquake. This earthquake shows that the fault line is active. It shows that it is a dynamic place. It neither takes the energy of the major earthquake nor triggers it. It is also impossible for us to call it a foreshock. But last night's earthquake is a clear answer to those who say 'These faults are dead and do not produce earthquakes'."
