Süleyman Soylu faces enforcement proceedings: 'Pay your debt within 7 days'

Former Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu has been subjected to enforcement proceedings in a compensation lawsuit filed against him by Prof. Dr. Baskın Oran, a retired faculty member of the Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences.

After Soylu was sentenced to pay 10,000 TL in compensation plus legal interest, Baskın Oran initiated enforcement proceedings against him when he failed to pay the debt despite the court ruling.

According to a report by Kısa Dalga, the enforcement order sent to Soylu by the Ankara 2nd General Enforcement Office stated that he must pay a total of 27,103 TL, which includes the 10,000 TL in non-pecuniary damages, as well as litigation costs, annual legal interest, and attorney fees.

The enforcement order requested that Soylu pay his debt or provide collateral within 7 days. The order warned that if the debt is not paid within this period, the money will be collected through forced execution, and it further stated that Soylu must declare his assets in such a case, or else he would face imprisonment.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Baskın Oran had written an article titled 'Some tragicomic experiments on Kurds' on T24 on June 23, 2017.

The then-Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu had used the following expressions regarding Oran's article in a post on his Twitter account: "I am filing a criminal complaint against Baskın Oran, a servant who has marketed himself as a man of science and has basely constructed every word of his article."

Following this, Baskın Oran's lawyer, Oya Aydın, filed a lawsuit against Soylu demanding 10,000 TL in non-pecuniary damages. The court initially rejected Oran's compensation request, and the decision was upheld by the appellate court. However, the 4th Civil Chamber of the Court of Cassation, which conducted the appeal review, overturned the court's decision. In the retrial, the Ankara 14th Civil Court of First Instance ruled that Soylu should pay 10,000 TL in non-pecuniary damages to Baskın Oran.
