Support for Özgür Özel from imprisoned mayor who voted yes to the framework law: 'He assumed a historic responsibility'
Evaluating the framework law accepted in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), Şişli Mayor Resul Emrah Şahan thanked YENİ Party Chairman Özgür Özel for supporting the law.

The framework law prepared within the scope of the second opening process, named "Terror-Free Turkey," which the People's Alliance is conducting with PKK terrorist organization leader Abdullah Öcalan and the DEM Party, has been accepted in the TBMM General Assembly.
YENİ Party leader Özgür Özel announced that he and his team would vote yes to the law, while his deputies were free to vote as they chose.
In the vote on the 12-article proposal, 467 deputies voted yes, 87 voted no, 7 abstained, and 31 deputies did not attend the general assembly.
Şişli Mayor Resul Emrah Şahan, who is currently imprisoned as part of the Urban Consensus investigation, had issued a statement of support before the framework law proposal reached the TBMM General Assembly.
Following the acceptance of the proposal in the TBMM, Şahan made a new statement, thanking YENİ Party leader Özel for voting yes to the law and supporting his decision.
In his statement, Şahan noted the following:
"Today, our Chairman Mr. Özgür Özel, in the midst of all kinds of government pressure, assumed a historic responsibility, upheld the will for a 'Common Future,' and stood on the side of peace. While our mayors are imprisoned, while trustees sit in our municipalities, and while Constitutional Court (AYM) and European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rulings are not implemented; we must insist on Turkey's future without allowing the injustices we experience to trap us in anger and the calculations of today.
Defending peace, democracy, and equal citizenship without forgetting any injustice and without giving up any struggle is the requirement of building the 'new' and believing in the 'Common Future.' I wholeheartedly thank our Chairman for this will and courage. The path is greater than all... Now, pushing this door that has been left ajar toward democracy and following it through to the end is the issue for all of us, starting tomorrow. May our path be clear."
