Syrians in Turkish-controlled region revolt following Kayseri incidents

A 26-year-old Syrian national, identified as İ.A., was arrested in the Melikgazi district of Kayseri after sexually assaulting his 7-year-old cousin, M.A., in a restroom at a marketplace in the Danişmentgazi neighborhood. The public reacted strongly upon hearing of the incident. Following the events in Kayseri, opposition members living in the Turkish-controlled region of Syria attacked Turkish trucks and the Turkish flag.

Following the sexual assault incident in Kayseri, attacks on the Turkish flag occurred during demonstrations allegedly held in response to attacks against Syrians.

In various parts of northwestern Syria, following the reactions against Syrians in Kayseri yesterday, dozens of people in the cities of al-Bab, Azaz, and al-Rai in the Aleppo countryside stopped Turkish trucks and attacked the drivers today.

Some protesters smashed the windows of the trucks.

TURKISH FLAGS LOWERED AND SET ON FIRE

The demonstrators demanded that Turkish flags be lowered from all streets and public service buildings in the region and that the three-starred flag representing them against the Syrian Arab Republic be hoisted instead.

The possibility of re-establishing relations between the Assad regime in Syria and Turkey, and the recent 'normalization' process, have disturbed the opposition in Syria.

Using the events in Kayseri as a pretext, Syrian opposition members were seen attacking Turkish trucks and the PTT (Turkish Post) building in Azaz.

Syrians living in the Turkish-controlled region of Syria attacked Turkish trucks. A large group attacked the Turkish trucks while shouting 'Allahu Akbar'.

Meanwhile, Syrians also attacked the PTT building in Azaz. The attackers lowered the Turkish flag on the building. It was also learned that Turkish employees at the PTT building were removed from the office and the building was closed.

"WE ARE ONE OF THE FEW COUNTRIES THAT FEEDS ITS ENEMIES BY PAYING MONEY"

Retired Brigadier General, Istanbul Aydın University faculty member, and 12punto.com.tr columnist Dr. Naim Babüroğlu made a statement regarding the attacks on trucks and the Turkish flag in northern Syria.

Describing the actions as the pinnacle of ingratitude and treachery, Babüroğlu stated the following:

"In the regions of Syria controlled by Turkey, Arabs supported by Turkey lowered and burned Turkish flags and attacked Turkish vehicles. It is the pinnacle of ingratitude and treachery.

This is the collapse of the Ummah policy.

 

The question is: How many billions of dollars did we spend for them to become our enemies? We are one of the few countries that feeds its enemies by paying money."

THE BORDER HAD BEEN OPENED

There have been notable developments in Syria in recent days. The Abu al-Zendin Border Gate between the regime-held area and the opposition-held area was opened on June 26. Trial crossings were conducted on June 27 through the border gate, which was opened after a 4-year hiatus.

The fact that Syrian opposition members, who do not want Turkey to negotiate with the Assad regime, attacked Turkish trucks and the PTT building following the events in Kayseri drew a major reaction.

TSK SENT REINFORCEMENTS TO SYRIA WHERE THE INCIDENTS OCCURRED

In Azaz, Aleppo, Syria, trucks arriving from Turkey were set on fire.

The Turkish flag at the police station in the same town was also attacked.

Units that came to calm the crowd, which had lowered and torn the Turkish flag, were attacked with stones and sticks.

Among the information received is that Turkey has closed all border gates in northern Syria until further notice.

Following this, the TSK (Turkish Armed Forces) sent reinforcements to the region.

SYRIAN INTERIM GOVERNMENT ISSUED A PRESS RELEASE AFTER THE EVENTS

Following the events, the Syrian Interim Government issued a press release.

The following statements were made in the release:

History and geography bear witness to the brotherhood that has existed between Turks and Arabs for centuries. Despite all the difficulties and suffering the region has experienced, we have full faith that this brotherhood will continue for centuries to come. This is required by the common destiny of the two peoples.

For this reason, the Syrian Interim Government condemns all extremist actions against Syrian refugees fleeing the crimes committed by the murderous Assad regime, its allies, and terrorist organizations. This condemnation includes the extremist behavior of some extremist individuals in Kayseri towards some Syrian refugees.

The Syrian Interim Government emphasizes the necessity of protecting Syrians in Turkey and all host countries and appreciates the legal steps taken by the Turkish Ministry of Interior against the attackers.

"WE CALL ON YOU NOT TO COMPLY WITH PROVOCATIVE CALLS"

Furthermore, the Syrian Interim Government calls on our people living in the liberated regions not to comply with provocative calls aimed at undermining the existing alliance between the Turkish and Syrian peoples and attacking goods and institutions built with the sacrifices of the Turkish army and the Syrian National Army.

 

The Syrian Interim Government highlights the danger of these events being used by the enemies of the revolution to harm Turkish-Syrian relations and to target Turkish brothers who work with the Syrian people in liberating Syrian lands from terrorism.

 

ERDOĞAN MADE A STATEMENT

AKP President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that "the poisonous rhetoric of the opposition" led to this situation regarding the events in Kayseri.

Erdoğan said, "Violence is unacceptable, hate speech cannot be used for political gains." Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya stated that 67 people were detained in connection with the events and that these individuals engaged in inhumane and illegal acts, causing damage to property belonging to Syrians.

The events in Kayseri took place at a time when intensive security operations against Syrian refugees were being carried out in Gaziantep, in southern Turkey.
