A 'tax' proposal for Şimşek from Yeni Şafak: 'Collect an 'asset tax' from the wealthy'

Yeni Şafak newspaper carried the headline "a one-time asset tax should be collected from the wealthy" on its front page.

While the pandemic, earthquakes, and the Ukraine-Russia war were cited as the causes of the economic crisis in Turkey, it was stated that "a one-time 'asset tax' should be collected from the wealthy to mitigate the effects of the global crisis triggered by the pandemic, the February 6, 2023 earthquakes, and the war on the economy."

It was noted that small taxpayers should be excluded from the regulation, stating that "it is sufficient for the regulation to cover taxpayers who keep books on a balance sheet basis."

A ONE PERCENT CONTRIBUTION

In the report, it was stated that the bill for the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes was larger than expected, and it was said, "There are hundreds of holdings in Turkey. The high assets belonging to the subsidiaries affiliated with these holdings and the individuals in their management are noteworthy. With a 1% contribution from the assets of individuals and institutions above a certain level, Turkey can easily shoulder the heavy burden of the earthquake."

Listing examples from around the world, Yeni Şafak newspaper highlighted that there are 44 thousand dollar millionaires and 18 dollar billionaires in Turkey.
