Appearing as a guest on Cansu Canan Özgen’s YouTube program, Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör explained the dangers awaiting Istanbul.

Emphasizing that an earthquake above magnitude 7 is expected under normal conditions, Şengör stated that the southern coastline, specifically the region from Tuzla to Silivri, would suffer heavy damage. However, he noted that the real catastrophe would occur after the earthquake.

"FIRES WILL BREAK OUT"

Stating that serious infrastructure problems will occur in Istanbul after the earthquake, Şengör said:

"On the first day, there will be fires everywhere. Fire crews will either be trapped under rubble or unable to intervene because they cannot reach their vehicles. It will be very difficult for aid to arrive from outside the city. Today, 60 percent of the teams sent to earthquake zones in Turkey go from Istanbul. When Istanbul is destroyed, this ratio will reverse, and very little aid will be able to reach the city."

"LOOTING AND STARVATION WILL BEGIN"

Stating that access to basic necessities will be a major problem after the earthquake, Şengör warned against starvation and looting. Expressing that the new airport will likely be damaged and become unusable due to being built on reclaimed land, Şengör said, "Within a few days, starvation will begin in the city.

Looting will occur. Then, epidemics will be seen. The rubble will not be able to be cleared for a long time, and the city will be covered in a heavy stench."
