Terror in the middle of the street in İzmir: Woman shot by her ex-husband is critically injured

Violence against women and femicides in Turkey show no signs of stopping.

On Friday, October 4, in Istanbul, Semih Çelik brutally murdered Ayşenur Halil (19) by slitting her throat at his home in Eyüpsultan, and later murdered İkbal Uzuner (19) in the Fatih district by decapitating her and dismembering her body.

While the echoes of this brutality, which deeply shook Turkey, continue, sad news has also arrived from İzmir.

İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Cemil Tugay announced that Özge Polat, who works at the municipality's Parks and Gardens Department, was shot by her ex-husband.

It was learned that Polat was critically injured.

Cemil Tugay used the following expressions in his post on his X account:

"Our country has a violence problem. Our women and children, in particular, are under intense threat. Every day we are shaken by new news of violence. Today, a person very close to us, a female colleague of ours, has unfortunately become a victim of violence.

One of our employees from the Parks and Gardens Department, Özge Polat, was critically injured by her ex-husband with a firearm. We wish our colleague a speedy recovery. However, this violence must end. Everyone must do their part to ensure this."

SHOT WHILE GOING TO WORK

On 8424 Street in the Güzeltepe neighborhood of İzmir's Çiğli district, Özge Polat, who left her home around 06:30 to go to work, was shot by her ex-husband, S.Y.

Upon notification of the situation by bystanders to the 112 Emergency Call Center, health and police teams were dispatched to the scene.

Özge Polat was taken to the Bakırçay University Çiğli Training and Research Hospital by medical teams.

It was learned that Polat, who was critically injured, remains in life-threatening condition.

The police have launched an operation to apprehend the suspect who fled the scene.
