While discussions regarding the 'right to hope' for terrorist leader Abdullah Öcalan continue within the new resolution process—architected by MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli and dubbed 'Terror-Free Turkey' by the government—a similar request has come from Şemdin Sakık, who was once the number two figure in the terrorist organization PKK.
According to a report by Özgür Cebe from Sözcü, Sakık requested a retrial, claiming that his right to a fair trial was violated after 27 years in prison. Sakık applied to the Ministry of Justice, requesting that the verdict delivered by the State Security Court be overturned in the interest of the law.
The Ministry of Justice reviewed Sakık's case, stated that there was no error in the verdict, and rejected the request. Sakık, who was captured in an operation in northern Iraq on March 15, 1998, and brought to Turkey, was held responsible for 251 armed actions, including the martyrdom of 33 soldiers on the Elazığ-Bingöl highway.
