A case similar to the high-interest foreign currency fund scandal known to the public as the Fatih Terim Fund, which dominated Turkey's agenda, has now occurred in Denizli.

According to a report in the Türkiye newspaper, Ertuğrul S. and 4 of his associates, who claimed to be representatives of a Dubai-based financial company, first ensnared their relatives and close circle, and later hundreds of other people, into the trap they set.

The suspects, who collected money by promising victims high profits from their investments, expanded their network by offering payments to those who brought in new investors.

The suspects promised victims, mostly expatriates and foreigners, a monthly return of 15 percent on their invested capital and an annual profit share equal to 5 times the principal amount. The victims, who realized they had been defrauded by the suspects—who also promised a 10 percent payment to anyone who brought in a new investor—filed criminal complaints in recent months.

It was determined that the suspects defrauded 48 victims living in Turkey, France, Belgium, Switzerland, and New Zealand, who have filed complaints so far, of 2 million 109 thousand 272 euros, 600 thousand TL, and 80 thousand Swiss francs. While Volkan Ç. and Ertuğrul S. were arrested as part of the investigation, it was determined that Sibel T., Tolga D., and Hicabi P. had fled abroad.

'THE SAME AS THE SEÇİL ERZAN CASE'

Victim attorney Anıl Aba stated that what happened is identical to the case known to the public as the "Seçil Erzan incident" and that the fraud scheme operated using the same system. Noting that according to the MASAK report, the 48 complaining victims were defrauded of around 3 million euros, but that the number of victims and the actual proceeds are higher, attorney Aba said, “We believe 900 people have been harmed by this crime. We are talking about a fraud network of around 200 million euros on average. Two company owners have been arrested. However, it is said that there are many people behind this team. The company partners and managers fled abroad before arrest warrants were issued.”

MONEY LAUNDERING

Stating that in addition to the crime of fraud, there may also be money laundering according to the MASAK report, one of the victim attorneys, Gizem Üğür, said, “In the MASAK report, there are multiple large-sum money flows in the suspects' bank accounts. These money flows are in amounts like 20 million, 30 million, 40 million.”
