Timur Soykan's statement to the prosecutor's office has been obtained!

Journalist Timur Soykan, who was detained due to social media posts criticizing the detention of CHP mayors, was referred to the courthouse today. An investigation had been launched against Soykan on charges of "publicly disseminating misleading information."

Timur Soykan gave his initial statement at the Istanbul Police Department. Following the completion of his processing there, he was referred to the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan in the morning. According to information obtained, the statement process at the prosecutor's office has been completed.

PROSECUTOR'S STATEMENT HAS EMERGED

Soykan stated at the prosecutor's office that he reiterates the statement he previously gave to the police. Emphasizing that he stands by his posts, Soykan said, "I previously gave a statement to the police. The content of my statement is accurate and I reiterate it as is. The posts dated July 5, which are the subject of the investigation, belong to me. By 'regime,' I am referring to the government in the Republic of Turkey. By 'coup,' which I mentioned in my tweets, I am referring to the usurpation of the public's right to vote and be elected. When the content of my tweets is examined, it contains observations made as a journalist and a citizen. The tweets in question are within the scope of freedom of expression, which is my constitutional right and due to my status as a member of the press. The operations that are the subject of the tweets relate to the judiciary being used as a result of political instructions. If I am arrested, it will be obvious that my tweets were accurate. I have nothing else to add. I do not accept the accusation leveled against me. I request to be released." he said.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Journalist Timur Soykan had made notable statements on his social media account yesterday morning following the wave of detentions targeting CHP-run municipalities.

In his post, Soykan “The regime is declaring that it no longer has any concern about convincing society of corruption operations. It is telling the public, 'You cannot choose a government other than me. You are my captive.' The public will either bow to this pressure and become a slave to the regime, becoming even poorer, or they will defend their freedom, their rights, and their country”had used the expressions.

In another post he made on the same day, “‘Defeating the AKP in the election’ should be entered into law as a crime. Thus, they would be rid of the burden of pretending that there is still a judiciary” he had shared these expressions.

Soykan described the operations as “The coup continues. The will of the people is being usurped. The ballot box is losing its meaning” he had also criticized with his words.

Due to these posts, he was accused of "publicly disseminating false information regarding the country's internal and external security, public order, and general health in a manner capable of disturbing public peace, with the sole intent of creating anxiety, fear, or panic among the public."
