Tsunami warning from Japanese earthquake expert! 'There is energy accumulation'

Architect and civil engineer Yoshinori Moriwaki said, "Some energy was released with the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Silivri on April 23. However, the fault in the Adalar and Çınarcık region has not yet broken. Energy is still stored in that region. It is unknown when it will happen, but an earthquake could occur in this region as well."

"TURKEY MUST PREPARE FOR EARTHQUAKES"

Participating in the Istanbul Architecture Summit held at İstinye University, architect and civil engineer Yoshinori Moriwaki met with university students. Discussing how Turkey should prepare for earthquakes at the summit, Moriwaki also touched upon the current state of Turkey regarding earthquakes.

Japanese Earthquake Expert Yoshinori Moriwaki stated, "I explained what needs to be done for Turkey and what the situation is in Turkey, especially as an architect. I would like to recall the words of the late Ahmet Mete Işıkara, known as 'Deprem Dede' (Earthquake Grandpa): 'Earthquakes do not kill people, buildings do.' If there is a building stock of 21 million in Turkey, unfortunately, more than 50 percent of it consists of unauthorized structures. This needs to be fixed. We must first fix the regions with soft soil. To fix these, we need to focus more on urban transformation projects. The city needs to be planned through urban transformation."

"EARTHQUAKE EDUCATION CAN BE PROVIDED FROM A YOUNG AGE"

Emphasizing the need to teach earthquake awareness from a young age, Yoshinori Moriwaki said, "In Japan, earthquake education begins in primary school. Earthquake education can be provided from a young age, especially through comic books."

"AN EARTHQUAKE MAY OCCUR IN THIS REGION"

Reminding that earthquakes occurred on the North Anatolian fault line in 1999 and 1912, Moriwaki stated, "It may be necessary to divide the 170-kilometer section between Yalova-Çınarcık and Tekirdağ into 3 parts. The middle of the region I described was broken slightly by the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Silivri on April 23. However, the fault in the Adalar and Çınarcık region has not yet broken. Energy is still stored in that region. It is unknown when it will happen, but an earthquake could occur in this region as well. There was some energy release after the 6.2 magnitude earthquake on April 23, but there is still energy left. "THE WORST-CASE SCENARIO IS A 3-METER TSUNAMI"

Speaking about whether there is a tsunami risk after an earthquake, Yoshinori Moriwaki said, "Given Turkey's location, its seas are small, but if there is water and it shakes, there will be waves. If an earthquake occurs within the sea in Turkey, a tsunami can happen, but in general, it could be around 1 meter. In a possible major earthquake, the worst-case scenario could be a 3-meter-high tsunami."
