TÜİK announces: Young people cannot get married! Average age of marriage for men nears 30

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has released its 2023 marriage and divorce statistics. 

The number of couples who got married was 575 thousand 891 in 2022, while it was 565 thousand 435 in 2023. The crude marriage rate, which represents the number of marriages per thousand population, was 6.63 per thousand in 2023.

DIVORCE STATISTICS RELEASED

The number of couples who divorced was 182 thousand 437 in 2022, while it was 171 thousand 881 in 2023. The crude divorce rate, which represents the number of divorces per thousand population, was 2.01 per thousand in 2023.

YOUNG PEOPLE CANNOT GET MARRIED

When the average age of first marriage is examined by year, it is observed that the age of first marriage has increased for both genders.

The average age of first marriage in 2023 was 28.3 for men and 25.7 for women. The average age gap between men and women at first marriage was 2.6 years.

KİLİS TOPS THE LIST IN CRUDE MARRIAGE RATE

The province with the highest crude marriage rate in 2023 was Kilis, with 8.09 per thousand. This province was followed by Aksaray with 7.81 per thousand and Gaziantep with 7.57 per thousand. The province with the lowest crude marriage rate was Gümüşhane, with 4.52 per thousand. This province was followed by Tunceli with 4.82 per thousand and Malatya with 4.98 per thousand.

FOREIGN BRIDES AND GROOMS

When marriages with foreign nationals are examined within the total number of marriages, the number of foreign grooms was 6 thousand 345 in 2023, accounting for 1.1% of total grooms, while the number of foreign brides was 31 thousand 29, accounting for 5.5% of total brides.

ONE IN EVERY 3 MARRIAGES ENDED WITHIN THE FIRST 5 YEARS

When divorces are examined by the duration of marriage, 33.4% of divorces that occurred in 2023 took place within the first 5 years of marriage, while 21.7% occurred within 6-10 years of marriage.
