TÜMÖD: 'Democracy has been suspended in our country, unlawful arrests are taking place'
The Association of All Faculty Members (TÜMÖD) has issued a statement regarding the arrests following the operation targeting Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and the İBB, as well as the events that occurred during protests by citizens and students. In its statement, TÜMÖD said, "We view with concern the disproportionate force used by our security units against our citizens and students who were exercising their democratic rights in the events that have been increasing in recent days."

The statement, issued on behalf of the TÜMÖD Board of Directors and signed by President Prof. Dr. Tolga YARMAN, included the following expressions:
"We view with concern the disproportionate force used by our security units against our citizens and students who were exercising their democratic rights in the events that have been increasing in recent days. Politicians have no right to strain our society. The political power, which has pitted itself against hundreds of thousands of people demanding justice and law, is unfortunately the primary party responsible for this troubled situation our country has been brought to.
Democracy has been suspended in our country. Unlawful arrests are taking place. As a result of the restriction on the exercise of constitutional rights, society is being put into distress in its daily life. These developments are alarming. Due to the pressure from the political power, the tensions formed in society are, heaven forbid, at a breaking point. The responsibility to solve problems and calm society belongs to the political power.
Everyone must fulfill their responsibility for the resolution of the problems in our country through law, democratic traditions, and love. It should be known that those who care about democracy, judicial independence, university autonomy, and a democratic, secular, social state of law stand on the side of reason, science, and freedoms. As TÜMÖD, we declare that we will never abandon these principles and that we are ready to fulfill our responsibility for the peace of society."
