İYİ Party Parliamentary Group Deputy Chairman and Balıkesir MP Turhan Çömez has announced that a military student was martyred at the National Defense University's 18th Main Base Command practical training camp in Yalova and has called for an investigation to be launched.
In a post on his social media account, Çömez stated that 4 students fell ill at the camp, one of whom was martyred, while 3 others are continuing to receive treatment in the hospital. The image in his post identified the martyred student as Veli Bilgin, a first-year student at the Air Force Academy.
While not providing a definitive official explanation for the cause of the illness, Çömez suggested that the incident might be linked to "sunstroke and the effects of extreme heat." Çömez emphasized that military training, especially during the summer months, must be planned with great care.
Recalling the loss of soldiers in İskenderun last year, Çömez said that they had issued warnings at that time regarding the incident, which came to the agenda amid allegations that two soldiers had been left without water under the sun for a long time.
In his previous post, Çömez had reported that the Ministry of National Defense had explained the cause of death of the two soldiers in İskenderun as "multiple organ failure caused by blood sodium levels due to extreme fluid loss," and had demanded that the medical and military aspects of the incident be clarified.
Following the latest incident in Yalova, Çömez called on the authorities, stating, "An investigation must be launched immediately, and those responsible must be held accountable."
