TÜRK-İŞ announces hunger and poverty thresholds for May: Approaching 4 times the minimum wage!

The May 2024 results of the "Hunger and Poverty Threshold Research," conducted monthly by TÜRK-İŞ to reveal the living conditions of employees and determine the reflections of price changes in basic necessities on family budgets, have been announced.

According to the research, the "hunger threshold," which represents the amount of food expenditure required for a family of 4 to have a healthy, balanced, and adequate diet, was 18,969 liras in May.

The "poverty threshold," which corresponds to the total amount of other mandatory expenditures for needs such as food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, health, and similar items, was calculated at 61,788 liras.

In the research, while the "cost of living" for a single employee was determined to be 24,609 liras per month, the minimum expenditure amount for food for a family of 4 living in Ankara showed an increase of 7.02 percent compared to the previous month.

CHANGE RATE WAS 83.06 PERCENT

According to the research, while the price of milk remained stable, the price per kilogram of yogurt increased by 10.28 percent and the price per kilogram of cheese by 4.42 percent compared to the previous month. No changes were observed in the prices of veal, fish, and chicken this month. The price per kilogram of lamb increased by 3.76 percent, reaching 762 liras.

The average price per unit of eggs, which had declined last month due to negative developments in exports, was 3.58 liras.

This month, the average price per kilogram of fruit increased by 21 percent to 56.53 liras, and the average price per kilogram of vegetables increased by 12.03 percent to 33.21 liras.

In Ankara, the price of 200 grams of bread rose to 10 liras with a 25 percent price hike.

Compared to the previous month, there was an increase of 5.50 percent in rice, 6.03 percent in flour, 3.41 percent in pasta, and 3.75 percent in semolina. The price of bulgur remained unchanged.

INCREASE IN SUNFLOWER OIL PRICE

The price per liter of sunflower oil increased by 6.71 percent compared to the previous month, reaching 60.62 liras. The price of olive oil remained stable. The price per kilogram of butter became 467.93 liras with a 3.02 percent increase.

Black olives, which averaged 267 liras last month, were sold for 276 liras this month. The price per kilogram of green olives decreased by 10 liras.

The price per kilogram of sugar increased by 6.07 percent to 42.5 liras. Salt, which had a 13.47 percent price hike per kilogram, was sold for 23.53 liras.

Tea and linden prices increased by an average of 6 percent. Honey and tomato paste prices remained unchanged.
