Gökhan Gün, a Turkish and U.S. citizen working as an engineer at the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon), has been detained after being found with dozens of top-secret documents he obtained by abusing his security clearance.
Gün was apprehended while preparing to depart for Mexico.
REMOVED THOUSANDS OF DOCUMENTS
Born in Turkey and residing in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., the electrical engineer allegedly removed thousands of documents from the office where he worked for the Air Force, according to U.S. prosecutors.
According to the 11-page criminal complaint, many of these documents were not classified; however, some were described as "piles of documents from the top-secret network."
Gün, who owns homes in Virginia, Texas, and Florida, was taken into custody by FBI agents who arrived at his Virginia home early the other day to execute a search warrant. Gökhan Gün is charged with the illegal acquisition and retention of national defense secrets.
