Ukraine has announced that a Turkish ship sailing in the Black Sea was targeted by an unmanned aerial vehicle.
In a statement made by the Kyiv administration, it was stated that the Vanuatu-flagged Turkish dry cargo ship, which was en route from Odesa to Turkey, was attacked.
The statement indicated that the ship was struck by a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
According to information in the Ukrainian press, two sailors injured in the attack were transferred to a hospital for treatment.
While initial images shared from the scene show that the ship sustained damage, it was reported that firefighting teams were conducting cooling operations on the vessel.
TENSION CONTINUES IN THE BLACK SEA
While the Ukraine-Russia war continues, it is known that similar incidents targeting commercial ships in the Black Sea have occurred in recent months.
Last March, it was announced that a Turkish tanker had been targeted by an unmanned surface vehicle (USV).
In that incident, which occurred off the coast of Kandıra district in Kocaeli, 25 crew members were evacuated, and no loss of life occurred.
STATEMENT FROM THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
An official statement has been released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the UAV attack on the dry cargo ship. The Ministry's statement is as follows:
"It has been learned that a Turkish-owned, Vanuatu-flagged ship carrying dry cargo from Ukraine's Odesa Port to Turkey was attacked by an unmanned aerial vehicle last night (May 28) and that two of our citizens among the crew were slightly injured.
The condition of our citizens serving on the ship is being closely monitored by our Odesa Consulate General.
Our concerns regarding the risks and threats posed to our region by the war-related escalation observed in the Black Sea recently, as well as our warnings regarding the potential negative effects on our country, are being expressed to all relevant parties at every level.
We reiterate our warning to all relevant parties to avoid steps that could lead to an uncontrolled escalation of the war.
Our calls for the preservation of the navigation safety of civilian ships in the Black Sea and the termination of the war through negotiations remain valid.
We remind the relevant parties that we are ready to develop regional ownership-based and result-oriented measures to prevent escalation and accelerate the peace process."
