Journalist Umut Çor, one of the students of journalist Uğur Dündar, has penned a highly noteworthy article in the Gülnar'ın Sesi newspaper.
Here is the article by Umut Çor, who says, 'Listen to the story of Uğur Dündar from me as well':
"I have been carefully following the attacks and social media lynching attempts against Uğur Dündar in recent days. And I wanted to summarize what I experienced after shaking hands with him to work on the ARENA program as a young journalist candidate when I was an 18-year-old university student.
Everyone who fears his journalism, is jealous of where he has reached, or whose interests were touched by the news he reported, has tried to attack Dündar, just like in the recent illegitimate child slander. This smear campaign has been carried out in every era. Some have even written that 'Uğur Dündar never trained any journalists.' I am one of the journalists he trained. Please, listen to the story of him from me as well...
The year was 1995. Uğur Dündar was the most well-known and trusted person in the country at that time. He was setting the agenda with the news he reported on the ARENA program, and he was often ranked first in all viewer categories. These were the beautiful years of Turkey when news programs, not ridiculous soap operas, received high ratings.
In investigative journalism, ARENA was standing out among programs like 32. Gün in terms of file-based reporting and foreign news.
Uğur Dündar was a person with a stern temperament who did not forgive mistakes. He was so loved that as soon as he went out on the street, hundreds of people would surround him and show their affection. Even the most popular pop stars did not receive this much attention. If his qualities, talents, and power were in anyone else, they could have declared themselves a prophet.
It was a great happiness for a young journalist like me to work alongside him. I served as a production assistant, or reporter assistant, on the ARENA program with Uğur Dündar. Later, I transferred to the Kanal D News Center and worked on his team for another 7 years as a TV reporter. The years I worked alongside him gave me the experience of decades.
Beyond his journalism, Uğur Dündar was a great television broadcaster. In my opinion, he is the greatest television journalist who has ever lived. I learned how to conduct interviews, camera angles, how to ask questions, how to approach news, and above all, ethical journalism from him.
Another thing I learned was that those who poke the hornet's nest of the immoral are subjected to attacks in every era. For example, the footage that went viral on social media recently, showing Uğur Dündar beating up a guard who attacked him, was leaked by those who wanted to finish Uğur Dündar off at that time.
FETÖ members had dug into his private life using immoral methods to find dirt on Dündar, but they were unsuccessful.
I said that mud was thrown at Uğur Dündar in every era! Let me tell you a funny memory of mine. Our time working together had ended, and I had returned to Mersin. In a venue, one of the people chatting among themselves was telling another that Uğur Dündar reported news in exchange for bribes. I joined the conversation. What followed developed like this:
'Is Uğur Dündar really reporting news in exchange for bribes?' I asked.
'Yes, he definitely does that,' he said.
'But I worked with him for 8 years, and I have knowledge about the news we went to, the news we didn't report, and the reasons for these. Uğur Dündar does not report news for money,' I said.
'-No! I heard it from a very reliable friend of mine. He takes bribes.'
'-Look my friend, Uğur Dündar already received a large salary from every channel he transferred to. He has no need to take bribes. Besides, the media sector is such a muddy place that any immorality comes to light sooner or later. So, are you trying to tell me about the man I worked with for so many years? And who is the one telling you this?'
'-I have a pimp friend, he is the one who said he takes bribes...'
Recently, when Uğur Abi was counting the journalists trained at ARENA, he didn't mention me. That's no problem at all. I know what Uğur Dündar has gained for me, and that is enough.
As a result, I continue to practice journalism in Mersin today. I am also teaching my team the Uğur Dündar style of journalism. I am teaching them Uğur Dündar's television broadcasting. As someone who worked with him for so many years and currently has no personal interest from him, I have told you about Uğur Dündar. It is up to you to believe me or the other 'friends'."
