University student takes their own life in cafeteria, Chief Public Prosecutor's Office denies claims of 'suicide due to economic reasons'

A 21-year-old student named R.A. committed suicide in the cafeteria of Anadolu University in Eskişehir.

According to a report by Eskisehir.net, the incident came to light when another student from the same faculty saw the young person who had committed suicide on the upper floor of the cafeteria in the morning and notified medical personnel and the police.

The student who found R.A. stated the following in their testimony at the police station:

"I am still a student at Anadolu University. Today, on 15/10/2023, around 09:20, I entered through the Anadolu University Pharmacy gate and was walking toward the Communication gate. I saw a person hanging motionless from the second floor of the two-story cafeteria with a mezzanine. At first, I didn't understand what was happening, so I approached the person closely, and upon realizing it was a human, I checked to see if they were breathing. When I realized the person's eyes were rolled back and they were not breathing, I shouted for help, asking if anyone was there, but I saw that there was no one around and called 112 to request an ambulance. Later, police and ambulance teams arrived, and I was directed to the police station to give a statement. I do not know the person who committed suicide. This is all I know and saw regarding the incident."

It was alleged that R.A. committed suicide due to economic reasons.

STATEMENT FROM THE CHIEF PUBLIC PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE

In a statement made by the Eskişehir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated that the claims that R.A.'s reason for suicide was due to economic factors do not reflect the truth.

The statement noted that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The statement included the following remarks:

''A press release has become necessary due to news content in written and visual media outlets on 15/10/2023 containing claims that a student committed suicide due to debts. An investigation was immediately initiated by our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the death of the individual named R.A., who was found dead hanging from the stair railings in a faculty building of a university in Eskişehir on 15/10/2023. Within the scope of the ongoing investigation, it is respectfully announced to the public that the deceased clearly stated in the note they left that their death was not related to debt, that the incident is being investigated meticulously in all its aspects, and that misleading and manipulative posts made before the investigation is concluded should not be given credence.''
