US-HTS meeting in Damascus

American diplomats have traveled to Damascus to hold talks with officials of the interim administration in Syria following the fall of the Baath regime.

It has been reported that US diplomats have traveled to the capital, Damascus, to meet with officials of the interim administration in Syria, where the Baath regime has been toppled.

In a statement issued by the US Department of State, it was announced that Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Barbara Leaf, former Special Envoy for Syria Daniel Rubinstein, and Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Roger Carstens have arrived in Damascus.

The statement noted that the US diplomats will hold meetings with officials of the interim administration in Syria.

The statement further indicated that the diplomats will seek information regarding American journalist Austin Tice, who went missing in Syria, and will also meet with members of civil society, activists, and other Syrian groups to discuss the future of the Syrian people and how the US can assist in this process.

The statement noted that the diplomats will hold a meeting with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) officials.
