Verdict for mother and father in Kahramanmaraş school attack trial: 'I am filing a complaint against my son!'
In the first hearing of the trial regarding the school attack in Kahramanmaraş that left 10 people dead, the mother was released, while the father's detention continues.

The first hearing of the trial regarding the armed attack carried out by student İsa Aras Mersinli at Ayser Çalık Secondary School, which resulted in the deaths of teacher Ayla Kara and 9 students, has concluded.
At the hearing held at the Kahramanmaraş 3rd High Criminal Court, the court panel decided to release the mother, defendant Peyman Pınar Mersinli, who was in custody. It was ruled that the father, Uğur Mersinli, would remain in detention.
The hearing, which began on the morning of September 4 and lasted until the night of September 5, was attended by the relatives of the victims, those injured, their families, and their lawyers. The hearing was also observed by İsa Mesih Şahin, spokesperson for the Turkish Grand National Assembly's School Attacks Investigation Commission and AKP İstanbul MP; İrfan Karatutlu, a commission member and AKP Kahramanmaraş MP; and Emir Hasan Arslantaş, General Manager of Legal Services at the Ministry of National Education.
According to ANKA, the father, Uğur Mersinli, faces up to 10 life sentences for "homicide with probable intent" and up to 30 years in prison for "injury with probable intent." For the mother, Peyman Pınar Mersinli, a prison sentence of up to 22.5 years is requested for the crime of "causing the death and injury of more than one person through conscious negligence."
Both defendants joined the hearing via the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS) from the prisons where they are being held.
During the hearing, the defense of the father, Uğur Mersinli, drew backlash. Mersinli, a first-class police chief and chief police inspector, stated, "A public lawsuit should be filed against İsa Aras Mersinli for intentional homicide, intentional injury, and theft. I am filing a complaint against İsa Aras Mersinli because he stole my weapons. My son took the weapons without my permission and against my will. I am being held responsible because I am a law enforcement officer and carry a weapon."
It was reported that the mother, Peyman Pınar Mersinli, stated that Uğur Mersinli had taken the child to a shooting range to give him shooting training so he could "get it out of his system."
The court decided that the next hearing will be held on December 4, 2026.
