Verdict reached in violence against women case that shook Turkey
The sentence for the defendant who brutally beat the woman he lived with in the middle of the street in the Akhisar district of Manisa has been announced. The sentence handed down sparked outrage.

In an incident that occurred on August 16 in the Akhisar district of Manisa, Yılmaz Akman (37) and Sude Naz Atak (19), who were known to be living together, began arguing on the street.
Yılmaz Akman, who caught up with Sude Naz Atak in front of a tea house as she tried to flee from him, began to assault the pregnant woman in front of her child and citizens.
Yılmaz Akman, who struck Sude Naz Atak repeatedly with a stick he was holding, was later detained by police teams arriving at the scene when citizens attempted to lynch him.
Yılmaz Akman, who was referred to the court and had a criminal record of 18 offenses, was arrested and sent to prison.
Witness testimonies were heard at the second hearing held at the Akhisar 4th Criminal Court of First Instance. Witness Erkan Çiftçi stated that Sude Naz came to the customers at the tea house asking for help, and then Yılmaz Akman arrived and assaulted Sude Naz.
Yılmaz Akman's brother, Mehmet Akman, stated that on the day of the incident, they began arguing in the car because Sude Naz did not want to go to Yılmaz Akman's village. He claimed he did not see what happened, stating that Sude Naz later got out of the car with her child and Yılmaz Akman got out of the vehicle behind her.
Admitting to the crime he committed, Yılmaz Akman claimed the incident occurred in a moment of anger and requested his release. In the case, Yılmaz Akman was sentenced to 9 months and 15 days for the crime of insult and 10 months in prison for intentional injury, and Akman was released under judicial control conditions.
Speaking to journalists after the hearing, Sude Naz Atak's lawyer, Meray Mollaibrahimoğlu Eraslan, stated that the case had concluded but they did not receive the result they expected, saying, "We are saddened by the conclusion of the case regarding the violence and insults that took place."
Stating that they found the sentence given to be very light, lawyer Eraslan said, "Because the sentences received, as always, emphasize the importance of violence against women. The sentence he received is so light that the defendant is being released, and Sude Naz Atak currently has no safety of life. The sentence received today for injury could perhaps result in her death tomorrow. For this reason, we want to express our sadness due to the leniency of the sentences given."
