Following the start of tree felling and road construction in the state forest as part of the Halilağa Gold-Copper Mine project that Cengiz Holding wants to open near Hacıbekirler village in Bayramiç, Çanakkale, the local people rose up. 12punto reported those moments step by step. CHP Chairman Özgür Özel addressed those resisting in the Kaz Mountains during his speech at the group meeting.

"WE WILL HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE"

Özel stated, "My aunts have come all the way from the Kaz Mountains. One of them from Hacıbekirler Village brought me this branch, and another said, 'please don't let our seeds disappear, my child, we brought these to you.' I kissed their hands; in my 20s, at 25-26 years old, we used to go to the resistances in the Kaz Mountains. We used to defend the gold of the Kaz Mountains and the olives on top of it. Now they are opening new mines in the Kaz Mountains, and because of those mines, they are leaving my 80-year-old mother in tears. She said, 'I got up and came, I didn't sleep all night, I came from the road,' she shed tears there, and she is shedding tears now. My dear mother, wipe your tears. We will hold those who dry up the country's streams and those who make mothers shed tears accountable; we will not leave you alone, I promise."
