The incident drew the attention of citizens in the area, and it ended when they immediately intervened in the attacker's actions.
STATEMENT FROM THE MUNICIPALITY
Following the incident, Ayvalık Mayor Mesut Ergin made the following statement:
"A vile act was carried out with the intent to damage the Atatürk Monument, which is a symbol of our Ayvalık and a sign of our devotion to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of our Republic.
The Atatürk Monument is a monument to the gratitude that the people of Ayvalık feel toward their great savior, and today, every resident of Ayvalık showed all traitors and fanatics there that they will not remain indifferent to this treacherous act.
Our struggle against the mentality that says 'I wish the Greeks had won' will continue today just as it did yesterday. Long live Atatürk, long live the Republic."
