Boğaziçi University students reacted strongly to Yıldız, who was set to speak on the topic of "Islamic sciences: For whom, how much?" Gathering at the North Campus with a banner reading, "There is no place in the university for a mentality that legitimizes male violence and abuse!" the students chanted, "Nurettin Yıldız, get out of my university!"
RIOT POLICE ENTERED THE CAMPUS
Following the students' protest against the event to be held by Nurettin Yıldız, police entered the campus.
The students reacted by chanting, "Police get out, universities are ours."
STUDENTS INJURED DURING POLICE INTERVENTION
Police intervened harshly against students at Boğaziçi University for protesting Nurettin Yıldız, who had claimed that "a 6-year-old child can be married off." Some students were injured during the intervention.
CRIMINAL COMPLAINT AGAINST STUDENTS
Boğaziçi University, led by Rector Prof. Dr. Naci İnci, who is known in the public eye as the 'appointed rector,' announced that it would initiate disciplinary proceedings and file a criminal complaint against the students who protested the invitation of theologian Nurettin Yıldız to the event.
The statement included the following remarks:
"Boğaziçi University is an institution that prioritizes freedom of thought and expression, pluralism, and participation. Any effort by any group to establish dominance through violence, pressure, and hate speech within our university ecosystem will never find a response from either our university community or our administration. Necessary disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against the person or persons who carried out the act in question, and a criminal complaint will also be filed through the relevant units. Such actions targeting the values and peace of our university will not be tolerated in any way."
