Independent Istanbul MP Cemal Enginyurt has reacted sharply to the statement made by CHP Bolu Mayor Tanju Özcan regarding the fire tragedy that claimed the lives of 78 citizens, in which Özcan said, The fire chief may have been afraid. He might have feared that if I report the deficiencies of such a hotel to the prosecutor's office, the business might sue me for defamation tomorrow.

78 citizens lost their lives as a result of a fire that broke out at the Grand Kartal Hotel in the Bolu Kartalkaya Ski Center.
In the investigation launched into the tragedy, 14 suspects were detained, and hotel owner Halit Ergül and operations manager Emir Aras, who were referred to the courthouse, were arrested.
While the debate over 'responsibility' between the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the CHP-run Bolu Municipality continues, Bolu Mayor Tanju Özcan made statements during a television program he attended last night.
Speaking on Sözcü TV, Özcan stated that the Bolu Municipality Fire Chief "might have been afraid of the hotel's management" and noted the following:
"The fire chief may have been afraid. He might have feared that if I report the deficiencies of such a hotel to the prosecutor's office, the business might sue me for defamation tomorrow. I learned about these applications after the fire. I learned that these applications had been made before, that our fire department had gone there, and that the applicant had later withdrawn them, only after the fire, and even after the Minister's statements."
During the program, Independent Istanbul MP Cemal Enginyurt reacted to Özcan's expression, "The fire chief may have been afraid."
"ONE FEARS GOD, DOES ONE FEAR A FELLOW HUMAN?"
Enginyurt said, "So 78 people died because of the man's fear. Is this conscience? 78 lives were lost because the man was afraid. While we were saying Mehmet Nuri Ersoy should resign... Because of one man's fear, when that man should have reported the inspection, it is a shame, 78 people have died. I mean, is it something to be afraid of... One fears God, does one fear a fellow human?"
