Citizens across Istanbul were caught in the 6.2-magnitude earthquake. The moment the earthquake struck in the Küçükköy neighborhood of Gaziosmanpaşa was captured on camera at a jewelry store. The people inside did not initially understand what was happening during the minor tremors. As the shaking intensified, the shop was evacuated following the advice of one person who shouted, "It's an earthquake, stay calm." Citizens, including a woman with a baby, rushed outside in a panic. It was also observed that plaster from the adjacent building fell due to the intensity of the tremors.
TRIED TO JUMP DOWN IN A PANIC
At that moment, the owner of a beauty salon on the first floor of the apartment building climbed onto the window and tried to jump down. While some citizens grabbed their mobile phones to get news from their loved ones, others shouted "don't jump" to stop the person who was in a state of extreme panic. Employees from the jewelry store went upstairs and brought the woman down from the window. The moments of panic on the street, which was flooded with people, were recorded by security cameras.
"SHE TRIED TO JUMP OUT THE WINDOW"
Describing the moments of panic, jewelry store employee Okan Erdoğan said, "We were working as usual. We had a high volume of customers as always. When the bracelet displays suddenly started shaking, we didn't realize it was an earthquake at first. When we felt a hard jolt from the ground, we understood it was an earthquake. In that rush, we immediately went outside. Because there was a strange sound. When the plaster on the wall of the adjacent building fell, we thought the building was collapsing. At that moment, when we went outside with the customers, I saw the beauty salon owner, who is a tradesperson next to us, at the window. She tried to jump out the window. We tried to calm her down. She was anxious because of the earthquake. Later, all of us friends tried to persuade the beauty salon owner. Then we went inside and brought the lady down. While I was working here, I felt something like a mallet hitting the ground right there. A few of our bracelets even fell from the displays to the floor," he said.
