Müjde Koçlardan wanted to divorce her husband, Faruk Koçlardan, on the grounds that she was subjected to both psychological and physical violence. Faruk Koçlardan, who did not want to divorce, attacked Müjde Koçlardan with a cleaver in the middle of the street while she was on her way to work in April 2024, leaving her severely injured.
Faruk Koçlardan, who fled the scene, was caught shortly after and sent to prison. Müjde Koçlardan survived by sheer luck. Following the attack, a lawsuit was filed at the Manisa 2nd High Criminal Court.
Despite the fact that Faruk Koçlardan had threatened both his children and his wife before the incident and used expressions such as “I will kill both your mother and you” the local court did not issue a sentence based on ‘premeditation.’ When the attacker claimed in his statements that Müjde Koçlardan had provoked him by not letting him see their children during the divorce process, the testimonies of both the children and eyewitnesses were sought.
The court sentenced Faruk Koçlardan to 15 years in prison. Barış Özbay, a lawyer for the Children and Women First Association who took on Müjde Koçlardan's case, appealed the decision, and the İzmir Regional Court of Justice overturned the verdict.
The second hearing was held at the local court on May 6, 2025. The court panel adjourned the hearing to June 25.
‘I CARRY IT TO PROTECT MYSELF,’ HE HAD SAID…
In his previous statements, Faruk Koçlardan “I had no intention of killing. My ex-wife’s brothers were attacking me” he had said. Regarding the cleaver he used in the attack, Koçlardan “I carry it for self-defense” he had stated.
‘WE WILL FIGHT UNTIL THE END’
Barış Özbay, a lawyer for the Association of Children and Women First who is representing Müjde Koçlardan, "Our struggle for justice will continue with determination. We are here until the justice that Ms. Müjde deserves is served. We will fight for him to receive the maximum possible sentence" they said.
