Heartbreaking footage from the Kartalkaya fire tragedy: 'I think we are about to die'
A video recorded by Müge Karataşlı, the sister of Özüm Karataşlı, who lost her life in the fire in Bolu, has revealed the horror of those moments.

The family of 17-year-old Özüm Karataşlı, one of the 78 people who lost their lives in the fire at the Grand Kartal Hotel in Bolu Kartalkaya, experienced moments of terror during the disaster. A video recorded by her sister, Müge Karataşlı, during the initial moments of the fire has revealed the frightening scale of the event.
In the video, Müge Karataşlı recorded their experience with these words:
“We are currently at the Grand Kartal. A fire has broken out, and we are trapped on the eighth floor. I wanted to record this, I think we are about to die! Life was beautiful.”
In the video, the frantic screams of people and the sound of breaking glass can be heard. As Turkey mourns the 78 people who lost their lives in the Kartalkaya fire, the tragedy of the event has been brought to the fore once again by this recording.
While the Karataşlı family narrowly escaped the disaster, 17-year-old Özüm Karataşlı, who entered the elevator in a moment of panic, lost her life. Separated from her family in the midst of the fire, Özüm became one of those who succumbed to the blaze.
THE FIRE CLAIMED 78 LIVES
The fire, which broke out in the restaurant section of the Grand Kartal Hotel located at the summit of the Köroğlu Mountains, 38 kilometers away, engulfed the entire hotel in a short time. Following the report made at 03:21, teams were dispatched to the region. However, 78 people lost their lives and 51 people were injured in the fire.
