Historian Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı made statements regarding the oath ceremony of the lieutenants who graduated from the Military Academy.
Evaluating the issue on the YouTube program he attended, Ortaylı stated, "They graduated at the top of their class, and they took an oath. What is wrong with this? If the person reading the sermon at Hagia Sophia holds a sword, they can hold one here too. Creating a conflict out of this is immaturity, sectarianism, and very shameful."
WHAT HAPPENED?
After the official oath, a group of Military Academy students drew their swords and, led by the class valedictorian, chanted the slogan "We are the soldiers of Mustafa Kemal!" before reciting the oath used before 2016.
The oath, which was labeled as a "pirate oath" primarily by circles close to the government, divided the People's Alliance following statements from AK Party Spokesperson Ömer Çelik and MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli.
