Incident at the Şile Municipality deputy mayor election! One person attempted to throw a shoe

Şile Mayor Özgür Kabadayı, who was arrested on bribery charges as part of the operations targeting CHP-run municipalities, had been suspended from his duties by a decision of the Ministry of Interior.

An election was held in the municipal council to determine who would serve as the acting mayor to fill the vacancy left by Kabadayı.

While the election was underway, an individual took off their shoe and attempted to throw it. The suspect was intervened with shortly after. Following this incident, tensions in the council rose even further.

No official statement has been made regarding the suspect's motive for the incident.

While the CHP group nominated Sacit Terzi, the People's Alliance candidate was Kaya Kocaman.

In the third round, Sacit Terzi was elected with 8 votes, while his opponent Kaya Kocaman received 7 votes. Following objections from the People's Alliance claiming that 'an absolute majority was not achieved,' the election moved to a fourth round.

In the fourth round of voting, CHP group candidate Sacit Terzi was elected deputy mayor with 8 votes. The People's Alliance candidate, Kaya Kocaman, received 7 votes in the election.

After Terzi officially won the election, chants of "Rights, Law, Justice" rose in the hall.

FIRST STATEMENT FROM ÖZGÜR ÇELİK

CHP Istanbul Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik, in a statement made in front of the Şile Municipality building after the elections, drew attention to the public gathering in front of the municipal building to protect the will expressed at the ballot box.

Çelik described the process as follows:

"First of all, I would like to thank our neighbors and fellow citizens from Şile who followed this council election to protect their votes and democracy, from the very beginning, with all my heart. A 4-round council election took place. In the first round, 7 of the 15 council members voted for the Republican People's Party candidate, and 7 voted for the rival political party's candidate. In the second round, it was again seven to seven, and there was one invalid vote. In the third round, the Republican People's Party candidate received 8 votes. The rival political party's candidate received 7 votes. And the fourth round of voting began. In the fourth round of voting, the Republican People's Party candidate Sacit Terzi was elected with 8 votes. He will begin his duties as deputy mayor in Şile."

Stating that there was an attempt to disregard the election results, Çelik said:

"In the March 31 elections, Özgür Kabadayı was elected Mayor of Şile with 52 percent of the vote. 9 council members were elected from the Republican People's Party, and 6 council members were elected from the rival political party's alliance. Despite these values and these numerical data, they came here today in full force. And they tried to seize today at the table what they lost at the ballot box on March 31. I thank the 8 municipal council members who did not allow this, with all my heart. Everyone should know this. Özgür Kabadayı is the elected mayor of Şile. He is currently in the Silivri dungeon. Our mayor will return to his duty as soon as possible; he must return. Until our mayor returns to his post, our Mayor Sacit will carry out this acting duty together with all our council members... We are going through difficult days. We are going through difficult times. Turkey is experiencing the birth pains of democracy again today within these difficult times. These are the birth pains of this democracy. No one should fall into despair in the face of these difficulties. Because the more the tyrant's oppression increases, the closer their departure is. The early election ballot box will come before the nation. The nation will deliver the necessary democratic slap in the first election."
