Murat Özdemir, a former contestant on MasterChef Turkey, had been arrested for various crimes after being disqualified from the show. Following the emergence of footage showing him torturing his parrot, Özdemir had made headlines for crimes including drug use, property damage, and domestic violence. Convicted of these crimes, Özdemir had been sent to prison.

Murat Özdemir was among the approximately 27 thousand inmates released under the 10th Judicial Package, which came into effect before the Eid al-Adha holiday. Sharing a video on his social media account after his release, Özdemir thanked AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. In the video, Özdemir used the expressions, "May God be pleased with Tayyip. May God give the lifespan of those who do not love Tayyip to Tayyip," sparking widespread reaction on social media.
