As protests continue across Turkey against the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, a notable incident took place in Kocaeli. Police teams intervening in the crowd gathered in front of the CHP İzmit District Organization in İzmit attempted to disperse the group using pressurized water from a TOMA vehicle. However, despite Police Chief Zafer Güven's order of "Do not use gas," riot police teams used pepper spray.

This situation caused citizens in the wide area between the Industrial Vocational High School and Fethiye Street to have difficulty breathing. During the intervention, Police Chief Zafer Güven reacted sharply to the riot police commissioner who used the pepper spray.

TENSION BETWEEN POLICE CHIEF AND COMMISSIONER

Following the incident, according to a report by Cihat Polat from Kocaeli Gazetesi, a remarkable dialogue took place between Police Chief Zafer Güven and the riot police commissioner. Chief Güven reacted to the use of gas without orders and reprimanded the commissioner.

Zafer Güven: “Commissioner… Where is the commissioner… Son, who told you to use gas?”

Commissioner: “We sprayed without orders”

Zafer Güven: “What do you mean without orders? Aren't we telling you, son! Aren't we saying don't use gas?”

Following this incident, it is awaited with curiosity what action the Kocaeli Provincial Police Department will take regarding the officers who used pepper spray without orders.
