President Erdoğan years later: The process from 'murderer' and 'coup plotter' Sisi to 'my dear brother'

AKP Chairman and President Erdoğan had previously used harsh terms such as "murderer" and "coup plotter" against Sisi, who took the presidential seat after Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Morsi was ousted in 2013, and Ankara and Cairo had suspended diplomatic relations.

President Erdoğan, in his statement at the D-8 Summit, gave a message regarding Israel's decision to expand settlements in the occupied Golan Heights. Erdoğan said, "It is very important to impose an arms embargo on Israel, to end trade with Israel, and to isolate it in the international arena." Furthermore, it was notable that Erdoğan referred to Sisi as "my dear brother."

Dear brothers, I greet each and every one of you. I thank Sisi for bringing us together today in Cairo as the D-8 Organization. The oppression that the Palestinian people have been subjected to for years has reached an unbearable dimension with the attacks Israel launched 440 days ago. 50 thousand of our brothers have been martyred in the attacks.

Lebanon is also facing additional difficulties. We have struggled for a permanent solution to the Palestinian issue. Our long-term goal should be to initiate a negotiation process to implement a two-state solution. As Islamic countries, we must lead the steps that can be taken against Israel.

'ISRAEL CONTINUES BY EXPANDING ITS ATTACKS'

Israel continues by expanding its attacks. We see that Israel is expanding its illegal settlements in the Golan Heights. After Lebanon, Syria has also become a target of Israeli expansionism. I believe that as the D-8, we must respond much more strongly to the lawlessness that threatens the stability of Syria and our region. It is very important to impose an arms embargo on Israel, to end trade with Israel, and to isolate it in the international arena. Israel disregards the territorial integrity of Syria.

We must encourage the maximum number of countries, especially D-8 members, to intervene in the case filed by South Africa at the International Court of Justice.

We must achieve results by providing strong support for the establishment of a ceasefire. I hope that the establishment of a ceasefire in Lebanon and the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria will be the beginning of a more positive era. The aid our country has sent to Lebanon has reached 1 thousand 500 tons. It is important for regional countries to be in solidarity without interfering in each other's internal affairs.”
