CHP Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer was detained at his home around 04:00 in the morning as part of a terrorism investigation.
Searches were conducted at Özer's home, workplace, and vehicle. Following the completion of police procedures, Özer was referred to the Istanbul Courthouse.
After his statement to the prosecutor, Özer was referred to the on-duty criminal judgeship of peace with a request for his arrest on charges of 'being a member of the PKK/KCK armed terrorist organization'.
Former Minister of National Education Hüseyin Çelik reacted to the detention of CHP Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer. In a post on his X account, Çelik stated the following:
"Esenyurt Mayor Mr. Ahmet Özer is a respected scientist and an intellectual who has authored dozens of books. I do not find it right for him to be detained at the crack of dawn. A 10-year follow-up is being mentioned. This individual was a rector before becoming mayor. Was it not a crime to meet with him while he was a rector? Why now?"
