Demolition work has reached its final stages in the Antakya district of Hatay, which sustained heavy damage in the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes.
The demolitions of heavily damaged buildings located on Saray Street in Antakya's Kışlasaray Neighborhood were carried out, and the debris was cleared. In the foundation of one of the buildings where the debris was removed on the street, 3 sinkholes of varying sizes formed. The sinkholes, which reach depths of 5 meters, were met with surprise by the local residents.
"A STREAM RUNS UNDER THE BUILDINGS"
Pointing out that the stream passing under the area where the sinkholes formed flows into the Orontes River (Asi Nehri), Nadir Aşkın said, "This is the upper part of Saray Street. As you can see, there is history beneath us. I think this is a stream, I don't have exact information. The visible stream most likely meets the Orontes River. It seemed quite interesting to me; I don't know if these places collapsed on their own or if there was a history here before. There were always buildings here, and the stream runs under the buildings. A lot of water is flowing from the back. Everything is hollowed out; it is probably flowing into the river" he said.
Stating that sinkholes have occurred in the region, Nihat Yoğurtçuoğlu said, "This stream has been here for years. Water flows from underneath; there is nothing to be afraid of. 3 of my houses were destroyed, I am staying at my workplace. After the building was demolished, this appeared. A sinkhole appeared here too, but there is nothing to be afraid of" he said.
