A magnitude 6 earthquake that occurred in the Aegean Sea in the morning hours caused panic in the region. Geophysical expert Prof. Dr. Ahmet Övgün Ercan issued warnings regarding aftershocks.

The magnitude 6 earthquake that occurred in the Aegean Sea in the morning hours was felt particularly on the Teke Peninsula. Geophysical Engineer Prof. Dr. Ahmet Övgün Ercan stated that the earthquake was caused by the African plate subducting beneath the Aegean.

In a statement made via social media, Ercan expressed that the earthquake occurred northeast of Crete at a depth of approximately 25 kilometers. "Following an earthquake of this magnitude, aftershocks reaching M5 levels can be expected," Ercan said, adding that it would not trigger another earthquake in Turkey.

 

In his next post, Ercan noted the following:

"In Turkey, earthquakes are remembered not by their magnitude, but by the number of people they kill. 

The only precaution is a solid structure on solid ground. 

For this, a strong individual, social, and national economy is required. 

Administrations should be based on ensuring the interests of society, not the individual. 

If this happens, earthquakes will still occur, but they will pass without deaths. 

Earthquakes are not the problem of the wealthy, but of the poor.
