Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel was attacked following the funeral ceremony for Sırrı Süreyya Önder at the AKM. 66-year-old repeat offender Selçuk Tengioğlu attacked Özel with a punch. It was revealed that Tengioğlu, who had killed two of his children and injured two others in 2004, had been released on parole in 2020.

Speaking on the Gündem Özel program broadcast on TGRT Haber, lawyer Mustafa Kemal Çiçek stated, "Normally, this individual should not have been released until 2029," while public opinion researcher Mehmet Ali Kulat issued striking warnings regarding potential new attacks.

"TURKEY IS GOING THROUGH A CRITICAL PROCESS"

Stating that Turkey is in a fragile period, Mehmet Ali Kulat noted that he had watched the moment of the incident several times and made the following assessments:

"I watched the moment of the attack several times. One needs to be very careful. Politicians, in particular, are people who are targets for those trying to stir up our country, and they all need to be much more careful. If this person had had another weapon in his hand, we would be talking about different issues. I think there was a security lapse; we need to learn a lesson from this."

"THERE COULD BE OTHER INCIDENTS"

Arguing that the attack was not merely an individual act but could be a sign of a larger problem threatening social peace, Kulat continued his words as follows:

"It is like a stick of dynamite thrown onto the brotherhood in society. I heard about the attack while I was sitting with one of our ministers today. I am saying this independently of Özgür Özel. Similar incidents could occur these days. There could be other incidents. It is a process we are always concerned about. Everyone must be careful about enforcing the laws. Those who commit such acts must not get away with it."
