A heatwave originating from Africa has entered Turkey via the Aegean and moved as far as Thrace. This warm air, which is affecting Istanbul and the Marmara Region, has combined with southwesterly winds to increase stress levels. Temperatures in Istanbul, which reached 21 degrees during the day, are expected to drop to 17 degrees in the evening.
The General Directorate of Meteorology and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) stated that the southwesterly winds could occasionally reach speeds of 70 kilometers per hour. It was emphasized that caution should be exercised, particularly in open areas and for maritime transport.
On Friday evening, desert dust carried by winds from Libya caused the sky over Istanbul and Thrace to turn a yellowish hue. Citizens were warned as this dust can cause sensitivity in the eyes and respiratory tracts.
According to AKOM's current weather forecasts, thundery showers are expected in and around Istanbul on Saturday and Sunday. The weather is expected to gradually improve on Monday. Stating that heavy rainfall may be seen across the Marmara region due to a low-pressure system coming from the Central Mediterranean, AKOM urged citizens to be cautious against flash floods, inundations, and potential disruptions to transportation.
