The Turkish Green Crescent Society (Yeşilay) was founded 101 years ago today. Following the First World War, it began operations in Istanbul under the name Hilal-i Ahdar (Green Crescent) with the permission of Sultan Vahideddin and under the patronage of Sheikh-ul-Islam Haydarizade Ibrahim Efendi, by Dr. Mazhar Osman and his colleagues, with the aim of protecting Ottoman society from alcohol and drug addiction. The society, which later took the names Green Crescent and finally Yeşilay, continues to carry out important work in the fight against addiction today.
The concept of the Iron Curtain was first articulated 75 years ago today. In a speech criticizing the Soviet Union's influence over Eastern European countries following World War II, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill spoke of an iron curtain descending across the middle of Europe. This concept was used to describe the ideological and political divide between the Western and Eastern blocs during the Cold War era.
Eskişehir faced a major flood disaster 71 years ago today. As a result of the Porsuk Stream overflowing in the city, 50 thousand people were left homeless, 2,500 houses were destroyed, and 6 people lost their lives. Aid for the victims arrived from the United States under the Marshall Plan.
